Raila Faults Government For Deploying Military in Northern Kenya

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party Leader Raila Odinga has criticized the government for deploying the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the insecurity-stricken Northern part of Kenya, terming it as unconstiutional.

Odinga termed the move by President Ruto to deploy the military in Northern parts of the country as illegally because it was done without the consent of parliament as the law stipulates.

“We have seen the military being deployed in the North without the authority of parliament as prescribed in the constitution, our constitution is clear that nobody can deploy the military without the authority of parliament.” Odinga said while addressing the media outside Jubilee building on Thursday 16 February, 2023.

Raila also accused President Ruto’s regime of weaponising State machinery to pour revenge on those who oppose him, as he cited the Wednesday’s raid on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i’s home. The opposition chief added that the president ought to be more keen on offering solutions to problems at the throat of Kenyans like economic hardships and hunger.

“That deployment taken together with real and imaginary enemies of the regime including former officials of the Jubilee government like Dr Fred Matiangi should be a concern to every Kenyan. The assault on democracy is being funded by the taxpayers’ money. At no time in recent history have our time lived through so much hunger, desperation, frustration while the government focuses on politics of survival and revenge” Odinga stated.
