NAKURU, Kenya — At least 14 people, including a child, were killed early Friday when a trailer collided with a 14-seater matatu at the Migaa black spot along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. The fatal crash occurred around 2 a.m. after the trailer, transporting coffee seeds to Eldoret, suffered brake failure and veered into oncoming traffic, striking the matatu head-on.
Police Spokesperson Michael Muchiri confirmed the death toll, stating nine males, four females, and one child lost their lives. The victims included all 11 matatu passengers, the vehicle’s driver, and two crew members from the trailer. Rescuers spent hours retrieving bodies trapped in the wreckage, which showed the matatu’s seats, windows, and tires completely mangled. The trailer’s front end was also severely damaged.
Emergency teams from the Kenya Red Cross and Nakuru County Disaster Management Unit rushed to the scene, clearing debris and transporting victims to nearby hospitals. The collision caused severe traffic disruptions along the highway, forcing motorists to divert for hours.
Migaa has long been flagged as a high-risk zone due to its steep gradient and history of accidents. In August 2024, 14 people died in the area when a Coast Bus lost control, rammed a car, and overturned. Muchiri urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, emphasizing the need for regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits.
“This tragedy underscores the dangers of black spots like Migaa. We urge all motorists to prioritize safety,” Muchiri stated.
Authorities have launched investigations into the crash, focusing on the trailer’s mechanical condition and driver compliance with safety protocols. The incident renews calls for improved road signage and enforcement along Kenya’s accident-prone highways.
