WhatsApp has named a new chief executive as it sharpens its focus on digital payments and business services. The appointment signals the platform’s ambition to grow beyond messaging and strengthen its role in online commerce.
The Meta-owned messaging platform has appointed former Stripe executive Elizabeth “Zuck” de los Rios as CEO, placing a payments specialist at the helm as it expands financial and commercial services across its global user base.
Her appointment follows the transition of former WhatsApp head Will Cathcart to a broader leadership role within Meta and comes at a time when WhatsApp’s payment services are gaining traction in major markets such as India, Brazil and Indonesia.
De los Rios brings more than seven years of experience from Stripe, where she worked on payment infrastructure, international transactions and strategic partnerships with leading technology firms. Her expertise is expected to support WhatsApp’s efforts to scale products including WhatsApp Pay, business accounts, in-app payments and digital commerce tools.
The leadership change aligns with Meta’s wider strategy of transforming WhatsApp into a platform where businesses can communicate with customers, market products and complete transactions within chats. The company has been investing in features such as shopping catalogues, product inquiries and click-to-chat advertising to attract more commercial activity.
The new CEO takes charge as WhatsApp seeks to expand its payments footprint while navigating regulatory requirements and transaction restrictions in different countries. The platform is also balancing growth ambitions with ongoing scrutiny over privacy and competition issues.
Despite its push into financial services, WhatsApp continues to maintain its focus on end-to-end encryption while facing competition from rival messaging platforms such as WeChat, LINE and Telegram.
With more than two billion monthly active users worldwide, WhatsApp’s latest leadership move underscores the growing importance of payments and digital commerce in its long-term growth strategy.
