NAIROBI – The funeral service for former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati will be held on Wednesday, March 5, at CITAM Karen, Nairobi, starting at 11 a.m.
According to his family, a special tribute service will follow on Friday, March 7, at his Kitale home, where family, friends, and colleagues will honor his legacy before his burial on Saturday, March 8, at his Sabata farm in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
Chebukati passed away on February 20 while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital. He had been battling brain cancer since April 2023, a few months after completing his tenure at the electoral commission. The disease recurred in April 2024, leading to a second operation in Germany, where he remained until August. A third recurrence in December 2024 saw him hospitalized until early January.
Family spokesperson Eric Nyongesa stated that Chebukati was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on February 12 after experiencing chest complications. Despite efforts to manage his condition, he succumbed to cardiac arrest.
Chebukati is remembered for his significant contributions to Kenya’s electoral process, having presided over three elections, including the repeat 2017 presidential poll. His tenure was marked by a steadfast commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law, and democratic principles.
His passing has elicited tributes from various leaders and institutions, recognizing his dedication to upholding the integrity of Kenya’s electoral system.
