National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has defended his participation in government-backed empowerment programs, saying his involvement is constitutional and does not undermine the neutrality of his office.
The Speaker’s clarification follows public criticism and questions over the appropriateness of his role in development initiatives typically associated with the executive arm of government. Critics have argued that such involvement could blur the lines between legislative independence and political loyalty.
However, Wetangula has strongly rejected allegations of political bias, pointing to provisions in the Constitution that allow the Speaker to maintain political links. He specifically referenced Article 106 of the Constitution, which permits holders of the Speaker’s office to retain political affiliations, provided they discharge their duties with fairness, neutrality, and uphold the integrity of Parliament.
The Speaker emphasized that his participation in empowerment efforts does not interfere with the impartial execution of his legislative responsibilities. His remarks are seen as an attempt to reaffirm his commitment to both his constitutional mandate and national development goals.
The debate comes at a time when the roles of parliamentary leaders in politically charged programs are under increasing scrutiny, especially in the context of preparations for the 2027 general elections. Wetangula’s statement seeks to maintain public confidence in the independence of Parliament while defending his engagement in community-focused initiatives.
