Speaker Amason Kingi Denies Request For Senate Special Sitting

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has denied a request for a special sitting from Senator John Methu.

On December 27, Nyandarua senator John Methu wrote a letter to the senate speaker, Amason Kingi, requesting a special sitting to discuss the abductions even when the senate proceedings had been adjourned. “This matter has raised deep national concern as it infringes on the fundamental human rights and freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, including the freedom of expression, association, and the right to life and security,” the Senator wrote.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, who earlier denied the cases of abductions, has now denied Methu the request to hold the special sittings. “From the foregoing. It is clear that your request does not meet the requirements set out in standing order 33(1) for the following reasons: a request for a special sitting should originate from the Senate Majority Leader or the Senate Minority Leader; a request for a special sitting is to be supported by at least fifteen senators.” He responded.

The Senate is not expected to resume its sitting until February when the operations will resume.
