Sonko Moves to Court to Challenge Harambee Stars’ CHAN Exit

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has filed a petition in Cairo, Egypt, contesting Kenya’s elimination from the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) following their quarterfinal loss to Madagascar.

Kenya exited the tournament on Friday after losing to Madagascar in a penalty shootout, in a match that had been highly anticipated to see the team continue making history in their debut appearance at CHAN. Despite Alphonce Omija’s opening goal that gave Harambee Stars the lead, the game ended in controversy after two legitimate goals were, according to Sonko, wrongly ruled out, forcing the match into penalties.

In his petition, Sonko is seeking the cancellation of the penalty shootout results and wants the Madagascar versus Sudan semi-final, scheduled for August 26, 2025, put on hold until the matter is heard and determined. He also demands that the match officials who presided over the controversial tie be suspended pending investigations.

The case, which was lodged within CAF’s required 48-hour appeal window, has already been served to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Madagascar national team, and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

If successful, the petition could mark a rare reversal in African football tournaments and reignite Kenya’s CHAN campaign. However, CAF has yet to issue an official statement on the matte
