Sifuna Defends ODM Amid Criticism and Resignation Talk

Nairobi – ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has declared his willingness to resign from his position if asked by the party’s leadership, sparking renewed debate over ODM’s direction and internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Citizen TV Tuesday night, Sifuna acknowledged growing discontent within the party over its recent cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government. “If I’m asked to step aside as Secretary General, I will,” Sifuna stated, affirming that the role belongs to the party, not him personally.

His comments come as pressure mounts from ODM supporters and factions who accuse the party of abandoning its traditional opposition role. Despite the criticism, Sifuna maintained that he still believes in ODM’s mission, saying, “I have not given up on the party or its members. Baba still knows what’s right.”

Sifuna rejected claims that he might join a new political outfit, including the Green Thinking Action Party. “I’d rather be a small fish in a big pond than a big fish in a small one,” he said.

On the 2027 presidential race, Sifuna insisted ODM is still capable of fielding strong candidates. He dismissed emotional politics, stressing the priority is to unseat President William Ruto: “We will not work with angels — even Sifuna is not an angel.”

He also left the door open to working with former CS Fred Matiang’i despite his past controversies, stating that anyone who can help defeat Ruto should be considered.

ODM has announced its National Delegates Convention will be held in October 2025, where party officials will be elected ahead of the next general elections. The event is expected to shape ODM’s strategy and leadership lineup for 2027.
