Kisumu, April 2, 2025 – At least four people, including three pupils, have died in a tragic road accident in the Kibuon area of Nyakach, along the Sondu-Katito highway.
According to reports, the accident occurred early Wednesday morning when a 14-seater matatu lost control and collided with a truck carrying sugarcane. The impact left several passengers injured, including pupils from Ober Boys Primary School, who were on their way to school.
Residents rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped in the wreckage, with the injured quickly transported to Nyabondo Hospital. Footage from the crash site showed the matatu extensively damaged, while the truck sustained minimal damage.
Authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, but area traffic police have launched investigations. The accident caused a major traffic snarl-up along the highway, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.
This tragedy comes amid a rising number of road accidents across Kenya. Just two days ago, seven family members lost their lives in a separate crash along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway when their vehicle collided with a trailer.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has raised concerns over the increasing fatalities, with reports indicating that at least 13 people die in road crashes daily. Vulnerable road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, account for the highest number of casualties.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to curb the rising trend of road accidents in the country.
