Security Forces Pledge to Eradicate al Shabaab Threat

The Defense Cabinet Secretary of Kenya, Aden Duale, has expressed the government’s strong determination to put an end to the al Shabaab terrorist threat in the country. Over the past two weeks, there has been an increase in terror attacks, particularly in the northeastern and coastal regions of Kenya, with Lamu and Garissa being the most affected. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least 23 people. In response to the heightened attacks, Duale organized a security sensitization meeting in Masalani, which was attended by top security officials, local leaders, and residents.

During the meeting held at Masalani Baraza Park in Garissa, Duale declared that it was time to completely crush the militants who have been carrying out attacks in the county for far too long. He emphasized that the current administration would be the one to end terror attacks both within Kenya and along its borders, including inside Somalia. Duale reassured the public that the government would not allow al Shabaab to continue their attacks and spread radical ideologies. He called on residents to collaborate closely with security forces to ensure peace and security while emphasizing that protecting the country from extremist individuals is the moral duty of every citizen.

Duale also highlighted the government’s commitment to modernizing the National Police Service and the Kenya Defence Forces. He announced plans to invest heavily in the security sector, including the procurement of equipment within the next three months to counter the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used by terror groups. Duale’s message to the insurgents was clear: the Kenyan security agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces, would relentlessly pursue and hunt down the terrorists along the borders and inside Somalia.

During the meeting, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo addressed concerns raised by residents regarding the slow response of security forces to actionable intelligence. He warned local administrators against operating outside their designated workstations, stating that the government would not tolerate such behavior. Omollo emphasized the importance of administrators being present at their assigned locations, as they serve as the government’s eyes on the ground.

The meeting was attended by various leaders, including the Garissa Deputy Governor, Members of Parliament from Fafi and Ijara constituencies, and senior county and regional officials led by the Regional Commissioner, John Otieno. The government’s commitment to tackling the al Shabaab menace was evident, and they urged the public to actively support their efforts in defending and protecting the country from extremist threats.
