Pauline Sheghu: First Woman to Conquer the Safari Rally

Pauline Sheghu, born in Taita Taveta, rose to prominence in the motorsport industry in 2006 after developing an interest in the Safari Rally.

Her journey into motorsports was driven by her love for cars and encouragement from mentors like the late Ben Muchemi. She made history in 2011 by becoming the only female driver to complete the entire course in a Kenya National Rally Championship competition.

According to Pauline, her inspiration comes from pioneers like Orie Rogo Manduli, who participated in the East African Safari Rally in 1974. Through resilience and dedication, Pauline has solidified her status as one of Kenya’s top female rally drivers.

Back in 1974, Orie Rogo Manduli became the first woman to take part in the Safari Rally alongside her navigator, Sylvia Omino. Sponsored by Lux and Lady Gay, they were unfortunately unable to finish the race. After being flagged off by President Kenyatta at the KICC, they were forced to retire in Kijabe. This legacy makes it all the more inspiring to celebrate our own Taita girl, Pauline.

In recent years, Pauline has continued to break barriers in motorsports. She led the women’s team in the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally, advocating for increased female participation in the sport. Her efforts have been instrumental in securing government sponsorships for female drivers, addressing challenges such as funding and support. Through her leadership and mentorship, she has paved the way for aspiring female rally drivers in Kenya.
