Opiyo Wandayi Defends Decision To Join Ruto’s Government

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has finally defended his decision to join William Ruto’s government.

Wandayi was the minority leader in the last Parliament and was always vocal against the bad deeds by the government. He was a very outspoken member of the ODM party. However, in July 2024, he joined William Ruto’s cabinet after both Raila Odinga and Ruto decided to work together shortly after the Gen Z demonstrations. He joined Hassan Joho and John Mbadi among other nominees who joined the government then. Since then he has defended different policies introduced by the government, especially the controversial Adani deal, which has now been cancelled.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Wandayi has now revealed that he understands the government better now. “When I was in the minority. I would have really laboured to know them. But now I know them; I can communicate them to the public. This is also part of my duty, and I am doing so from a position of principle. I was not criticising the government for the sake of criticism. I was pointing out issues as I knew them. I am now better informed about the workings of government and about government programs,” Wandayi stated.
