One Dead, Another Injured in Early Morning Crash on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

A tragic road accident involving three trailers early Friday morning has left one person dead and another seriously injured on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. The collision occurred around the Jet Inn area, between Emali and Masimba, on a stretch of the road that passes over a railway bridge.

According to police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the crash happened in the early hours and involved three heavy trailers colliding at the centre of the bridge. “Three trailers were early this morning involved in a collision at the middle of a railway bridge section of the highway resulting in one confirmed fatality and serious injuries to one driver,” he said.

The impact of the crash caused a complete blockage of the busy highway, resulting in a massive traffic gridlock that affected both directions of travel. Emergency response units were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage the wreckage and restore movement along the road.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the affected section of the highway as clearance operations continue. As a precaution, alternative routes have been recommended to ease congestion and allow safe passage for commuters.

Motorists travelling from Mombasa to Nairobi are advised to use the route through Makindu, Wote, and Machakos Junction. Those heading from Nairobi to Mombasa should follow the reverse route via Machakos Junction, Wote, and Makindu.

The incident has raised renewed concerns over road safety, particularly on narrow bridge sections frequently used by long-distance heavy vehicles. Investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.

Traffic police continue to monitor the area closely, and further updates will be provided as the situation develops. Road users are urged to exercise caution and remain patient as emergency teams work to fully reopen the highway.
