MP Ng’ang’a Faces Kiambu Government Dispute Over Market

A political standoff has erupted at Ngoliba Trading Centre in Thika, Kiambu County, following a heated dispute between Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a and the Kiambu County Government over the construction of a market. The row escalated on Tuesday after more than 50 armed police officers clashed with traders and residents, firing tear gas to disperse them, leaving some injured.

The tensions began last Thursday when MP Ng’ang’a, accompanied by Ngoliba MCA Joachim Njama, Nominated MCA Susan Mburu, and supporters donning pro-Ng’ang’a merchandise, officially launched the market amid a heavy police presence. However, the Kiambu County Government contested the launch, claiming the market falls under their jurisdiction, leading to a bitter conflict over control of the facility.

On Tuesday, the situation worsened as police, deployed to guard the disputed market, reportedly fired tear gas canisters at traders and residents attempting to access the area. Patrick Wambua, a Ngoliba resident, claimed he sustained injuries to his hands and back after being hit by a canister.

“The chaos started last Thursday when the MP arrived with police and some rowdy supporters. Since then, police officers have been blocking traders and county officials from entering the market. Today, they attacked us with tear gas. We want Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen to explain why armed officers have been deployed to harass locals,” Wambua told theafricanwatch.com.

The police contingents guarding the market reportedly came from various stations, including Kinoo in Kikuyu, Githurai Kimbo in Ruiru, Karuri in Kiambaa, Gatundu North, and Kiamumbi in Kiambu Township. Residents are now demanding answers as political tensions continue to rise over the market’s control.
