Nairobi, June 5, 2025 — Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has hit out at the country’s leading political parties, accusing them of taking the Luhya community for granted. Speaking on Wednesday, Salasya claimed that the Luhyas have long been used as a political tool—consistently delivering votes but receiving little in return.
“For years, the Luhya community has supported various political formations, but our loyalty has rarely translated into tangible development or representation,” Salasya said. “We are no longer willing to be voting machines for leaders who ignore our needs after elections.”
Salasya noted a growing shift among Luhya voters, especially those residing in Nairobi, who he said are beginning to detach themselves from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a party historically backed by many in the community. He warned that unless national leaders begin to address the long-standing grievances of the Luhya people—including issues of economic marginalization and limited political appointments—they risk losing a key voting bloc.
“Both ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) should take note—Luhyas are awakening politically,” he added. “Our support is not automatic. It must be earned through meaningful engagement and delivery.”
The MP’s remarks come amid increased jostling for support in Western Kenya ahead of the 2027 general election. Political analysts suggest Salasya’s comments reflect a broader frustration among minority communities that feel sidelined in national politics, despite their electoral significance.
Salasya has consistently positioned himself as a vocal advocate for Luhya interests, often challenging both government and opposition leaders to take the region’s development seriously.
As realignments begin to take shape across the country, his remarks could signal a shift in the political landscape—and a potential challenge to parties that have long relied on the Luhya vote.
