Former Finance Minister Amos Kimunya has officially announced his retirement from active politics, bringing to a close a public service career that spanned two decades and saw him hold some of the country’s most influential government positions.Kimunya made the announcement shortly after he was acquitted in the long-running 25-acre Nyandarua land case in which he had faced allegations of abuse of office and conflict of interest.
The case had remained one of the most closely followed legal battles involving a senior former government official.Speaking after the court decision, Kimunya said he was satisfied with his contribution to national leadership and had no intention of seeking elective office again. He noted that his years in politics had given him an opportunity to serve Kenyans in different capacities and help shape the country’s economic and governance agenda.
The former minister represented Kipipiri Constituency in Parliament from 2002 until 2022. During that period, he served under former President Mwai Kibaki in several senior Cabinet positions, including Minister for Lands and later Minister for Finance.As Finance Minister, Kimunya played a major role in guiding Kenya’s economy during difficult periods, including the aftermath of the 2007 post-election crisis.
He was credited with supporting fiscal reforms, strengthening trade policies and helping maintain economic stability during a challenging political environment.Later in his political career, he served as Majority Leader in the National Assembly, where he helped coordinate government business in Parliament.Beyond politics, Kimunya has maintained a strong presence in the professional and academic fields.
A trained accountant, he previously chaired the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), one of the country’s leading professional bodies.In 2019, he earned a PhD in Business Administration from United States International University-Africa, graduating top of his class.Kimunya said he now intends to focus on mentorship, teaching and professional consultancy work as he begins a new chapter outside active politics.
