Kenya’s national football team, the Harambee Stars, secured an important point in a 1-1 draw against Angola during their second Group A fixture at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN). The match took place at Kasarani Stadium, where Kenya overcame an early deficit and a first-half red card to earn the result.
Angola, who had lost their opening match 2-0 to Morocco, started the game strongly and took the lead in the 7th minute through Jo Paciencia. Kenya, however, responded swiftly. After Austin Odhiambo was fouled inside the box, a penalty was awarded following a VAR review. Odhiambo converted the penalty in the 12th minute, sending goalkeeper Neblu the wrong way to equalize.
Early Pressure and Quick Equalizer
Similar to their previous game against DR Congo, Kenya began the match on the back foot, allowing Angola to control possession and create chances. The breakthrough for Angola came when Bernabe Muafulo Tomas set up Paciencia, who dribbled past a defender and scored past goalkeeper Bryne Omondi. This time, unlike the DR Congo match where an early Kenyan goal was ruled out by VAR, Angola’s goal stood.

Kenya’s equalizer just five minutes later shifted momentum. Building from the back, Kenya pushed forward, and a clumsy foul on Odhiambo by Joaquim Balanga led to the decisive penalty. The composed finish by Odhiambo brought the match level.
Red Card and Gritty Defensive Display
Kenya suffered a setback midway through the first half when Marvin Nabwire was sent off after a second bookable offense, following a poor back pass from goalkeeper Omondi that led to a shirt pull on Paciencia to stop a goal-scoring opportunity.
Despite going down to 10 men, the Harambee Stars remained organized and determined. They held off Angola’s attacks with crucial interventions, Omondi saved a dangerous header from Paciencia, and Alpha Onyango blocked a powerful effort from Gilberto.
Angola thought they had snatched a late winner in stoppage time when Kaporal scored, but the goal was correctly disallowed for offside. The game finished 1-1, giving Kenya a vital point as they prepare for their final group match.
DR Congo Bounces Back with Win
In the other Group A match at Nyayo Stadium, DR Congo kept their tournament hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Zambia. Goals from Ibrahim Matobo and substitute Horso Mwaku sealed the win for the Leopards, who had lost to Kenya in their opening game.
This result ended DR Congo’s five-match winless streak at CHAN and handed Zambia their first-ever group stage defeat in the competition’s history.
