Opposition leaders, led by Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, have accused the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Secretariat of engaging in questionable practices, including the alleged relocation of servers and plans to procure excess election materials.
The leaders urged President William Ruto to expedite the formation of the IEBC Selection Panel, accusing him of interfering with independent institutions and delaying critical electoral reforms. They warned of street protests by March if the commission is not reconstituted promptly.
Kalonzo stated, “Within the IEBC Secretariat, there are troubling activities like procurement. We gather that a former Commissioner, now advising at State House, is influencing the Secretariat. If we allow this to continue, they may begin procuring election materials for 2027 prematurely.”
Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni echoed the sentiment, calling on Ruto to ensure the timely appointment of IEBC Commissioners, emphasizing the opposition’s readiness to hold the government accountable.
DAP-Kenya Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa criticized the administration for delays in reconstituting the IEBC, stating, “We are in the third year of this administration. Preparations for the next election must begin now.”
This comes after the High Court dismissed a petition challenging the constitution of the IEBC Selection Panel, clearing the way for President Ruto to appoint new commissioners. Justice Dola Chepkwony ruled that claims of exclusion of persons with disabilities in the panel’s formation were unsubstantiated.
The nominees for the panel include Dr. Nelson Makanda, Fatuma Saman, Amb. Koki Muli, Evans Misati, Nicodemus Bore Kipchirchir, Andrew Tanui Kipkoech, Caroline Kituku, Prof. Adams Oloo, and Linda Koome.
The opposition remains adamant that reforms are crucial to ensure a credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
