Darren Watkins Jr., the 20-year-old YouTuber known as IShowSpeed with over 80 million followers, arrived in Kenya on January 11 to kick off the East Africa leg of his 28-day ‘Speed Does Africa’ tour across 20 countries.
Kenya Tourism Board officials and Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano welcomed him with hype for Nairobi’s energy, Maasai Mara safaris, and foods like ugali and nyama choma, crowdsourcing his first stops while fans buzz about matatus and wildlife.
His tour has surprised many American viewers with Africa’s modern cities and amenities, boosting Kenya’s profile as a tourism gem, though some locals worry about distractions from issues like a missing activist.
The activist is expected to immerse himself fully in Kenya’s vibrant culture and lifestyle—hunting and jumping alongside the Maasai, racing with Omanyala, feeding giraffes, and experiencing the electric energy of matatu culture. His journey will also take him into the kitchen, cooking with Ombachi, before rounding off with a deep dive into Mombasa’s rich street food scene.
