The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a strong condemnation of recent remarks by Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Jehow, who suggested that leaders from the North Eastern region would manipulate votes in favour of President William Ruto during the 2027 General Election.
The Commission expressed deep concern over the implications of such comments, terming them reckless and harmful to Kenya’s democratic space. According to the IEBC, statements hinting at election rigging undermine the credibility of electoral institutions and erode public trust in the country’s democratic processes.
In its response, the IEBC emphasized that Kenya’s electoral system is built on principles of transparency, fairness, and integrity. The Commission has urged the public to ignore and distance themselves from such sentiments, warning that political rhetoric that casts doubt on the independence of the Commission could destabilize the electoral environment ahead of the 2027 polls.
Jehow’s remarks have sparked widespread criticism, with observers warning that such utterances could inflame public suspicion and tension. The IEBC reiterated its commitment to conducting credible elections and called for responsible conduct from leaders, especially in matters that touch on the sanctity of the ballot.
