Former Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has accused the Kenya Kwanza government of deliberately allowing the sale of illicit brews in the Mount Kenya region. Speaking to the residents of Kangai in Kiringaga county, the once powerful statesman expressed concerns over the return of illegal alcohol in the region which he termed very deadly to the people of Mt. Kenya.
Referencing to the incident that happened 2024, where consumption of illicit liquor claimed 17 lives in Kangai Ward, the former Deputy president said it is worrying for the government to delay taking immediate measures to campaign against the use of such deadly substances in the region.
Gachagua’s sentiments just echoed out, two days after some two people were hospitalized in Kerugoya Referral hospital for medication, after consuming toxic alcohol in Kangai on Tuesday.
The former DP, through a phone call to Kirinyaga Senator James Murango, urged the residents of Mount Kenya to cease using illegal and harmful substances saying they are a target by the government.
Sidelining with Gachagua, Senator Murango, Kirinyaga woman representative Jane Njeri maina and Baragwi MCA David Mathenge, blamed the county government of Kirinyaga for issuing licenses to more bars in the region.
According to the leaders, the action threatens the campaign set to stop consumption of the harmful liquor by the residents.
The also accused the county security teams of allowing bar owners to operate 24 hours, which they say threatens the campaign
