Nairobi: Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been barred from using the Kasarani Gymnasium for the launch of his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), initially scheduled for June 4.
In a letter dated May 26, Sports Kenya Director-General Gabriel Komora cited prior bookings by sports teams and upcoming preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) as reasons for the cancellation. Komora also ruled out any further bookings at the facility due to the tournament.
“We regret to inform you that the venue will not be available due to prior bookings by sports teams. Kindly consider looking for an alternative venue,” the letter stated.
The cancellation has sparked outrage from Gachagua’s DCP, which termed the move politically motivated. According to the party, it had submitted a booking request on May 20, which was approved the following day. An official invoice confirmed the party paid Ksh3.7 million to secure the venue.
In a statement, the DCP condemned the reversal as a “deliberate attempt to frustrate our democratic right,” accusing President William Ruto’s administration of suppressing political freedoms.
“The Kasarani Gymnasium is a public facility. Every Kenyan has a right to access and utilise it for the public good,” the party asserted.
Photos of the newly unveiled DCP offices in Lavington were released earlier this month, signalling Gachagua’s political comeback.
With the cancellation creating uncertainty among supporters, the DCP leadership is expected to announce an alternative venue and way forward in the coming days.
The incident adds to the growing political tension as new parties emerge ahead of the 2027 general elections.
