NAIROBI — The probe into the shocking murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Ong’ondo Were has intensified following the dramatic arrest of his personal driver and bodyguard.
The two were apprehended late Tuesday night in a house located in the Mihang’o area of Kayole. Police have described them as persons of interest after their statements about the fatal shooting contradicted each other during initial questioning. Investigators say the inconsistencies raised serious concerns, prompting their continued detention.
In a further breakthrough, detectives have also arrested two additional suspects Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, alias Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi believed to be linked to the killing. The suspects were found in possession of two firearms: a Retay Falcon and a Sarsilmaz pistol, along with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Also recovered during the arrest were a bag and shoes allegedly worn by the gunman on the day of the murder. All items have been submitted for forensic examination.
MP Were was ambushed and fatally shot five times on April 30 while caught in traffic along Valley Road near the City Mortuary. A post-mortem confirmed that the bullets pierced vital organs, including his heart, causing instant death.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the assailant approached the legislator on foot, opened fire at close range, and fled the scene on a waiting motorcycle.
As detectives piece together critical leads, the arrests mark a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the slain second-term legislator. Police have vowed to leave no stone unturned in their quest to uncover the motive and bring all those involved to book.
