The National Police Service (NPS) has formally denied reports regarding the DCI Mohamed Amin’s tenure. Specifically, officials rejected claims that his term ended on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. This move follows a major media report. It claimed his two-year contract extension had expired. Consequently, this left a leadership gap during a rise in unresolved abduction cases.
Police Clarify Leadership Status
The dispute over the director’s status began after a leading daily reported his exit. However, Inspector-General Douglas Kanja clarified the situation during a briefing in Kericho. He confirmed that Mr. Amin remains in office lawfully. Furthermore, he urged the public to ignore claims of a leadership vacuum. Kanja described these reports as speculative and misleading.
“The DCI is just discharging his duties,” IG Kanja stated. “His contract is not yet over.” He emphasized that legal procedures govern the tenure of senior officials. Therefore, media declarations do not determine these roles. Mr. Amin reached the retirement age of 60 in 2024. Nevertheless, he secured a two-year extension that remains active today.
Scrutiny Over Rising Abductions
This confusion occurs during intense public scrutiny of “mysterious abductions.” For instance, human rights groups often link the DCI to these disappearances. These claims increased following the 2024 and 2025 protests. In response, the NPS strongly refuted these links in a separate statement. They called the claims “reckless” attempts to lower public confidence.
Meanwhile, the government defends Mr. Amin’s strong record. They cite better forensic tools and the dismantling of criminal groups. Conversely, critics point to failures in high-profile cases like the Mukuru quarry bodies. Senator Okiya Omtatah has also called for his resignation. He alleges “false testimony” regarding activist Albert Ojwang.
Currently, Mr. Amin remains at the helm of the DCI. He even recently made command changes to improve operations. Additionally, the National Police Service Commission will provide a formal update soon. This update will clarify the exact expiry date of his contract. Such a move should finally resolve the ongoing administrative ambiguity.
