Erastus Edung Ethekon has officially been sworn in as the new Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), replacing the late Wafula Chebukati. The ceremony, held at the Supreme Court and presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome, also saw six new commissioners take their oath of office.
Ethekon was joined by Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah. All pledged to uphold the Constitution and discharge their duties with integrity, impartiality, and dedication to the people of Kenya.
“I, Erastus Edung Ethekon, having been appointed Chairperson of the IEBC, do solemnly swear that I will obey, respect, and uphold the Constitution,” Ethekon stated. He further vowed to execute his duties without fear, favour, or prejudice.
In his remarks following the oath, Ethekon expressed appreciation to President William Ruto for the appointment, promising to uphold democratic values and ensure the voices of Kenyans are heard. “Today marks the beginning of our service to the people of Kenya. We must approach this sacred duty with urgency, integrity, and unwavering commitment,” he said.
The swearing-in comes just hours after President Ruto re-gazetted their appointments, following a High Court ruling that nullified the initial gazette notice. A three-judge bench had determined that the earlier notice violated conservatory orders issued on May 29.
With the IEBC now fully constituted, attention turns to the new team’s ability to restore public confidence and steer the country toward credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral processes.
