A Nairobi court has ordered the immediate release of seven university students who had been arrested in connection with the death of Daystar University student Lorna Kathambi, following new evidence that clarified the circumstances surrounding her tragic fall. The students, who had been treated as key suspects in the initial stages of the investigation, were freed after detectives presented CCTV footage showing that Kathambi had attempted to jump from one balcony to another shortly before she fell to her death.
The footage, captured in the early hours of the morning, appeared to contradict earlier claims suggesting foul play.According to investigators, Kathambi had been in the company of friends prior to the incident, and no physical confrontation was seen in the reviewed footage.
The court noted that the evidence did not place the seven students at the scene in a manner that implicated them in causing her death.Family members, who had earlier demanded clarity on the circumstances leading to their daughter’s death, called for a thorough and transparent conclusion to the investigation.
Police have maintained that while the students have been released, the inquiry into what may have prompted the risky balcony movement is still ongoing. The university community has been urged to remain calm as authorities continue piecing together the final moments of Kathambi’s life.
Counselors at Daystar University have also been deployed to support students affected by the tragedy.Authorities are expected to release a comprehensive report once all statements and forensic details have been compiled.
