Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called on the Public Service Commission (PSC) to increase the monthly pay for government interns. Currently, interns receive between Ksh15,000 and Ksh30,000, which Cherargei says is too little, especially in cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, where living costs are high.
The senator also urged the PSC to create more internship opportunities and spread them fairly across departments. He emphasized the need for internships to offer clear chances for permanent employment, noting that the current system is poorly funded and does not help interns build their skills effectively.
In his petition to the Senate, Cherargei proposed legal changes to reward and encourage innovation among interns. He highlighted that many interns are unpaid or receive only meals as compensation, calling this unfair treatment.
Cherargei believes improving pay and opportunities for interns will motivate young people, nurture their talents, and ensure better career growth for those starting in public service.
