On Wednesday, senators who support the opposition abstained from the questioning of cabinet secretaries.
As CSs including Interior’s Kithure Kindiki answered inquiries, the legislators who make up the Minority side of the House were absent. Zachariah Njeru (Lands) and Salim Mvurya (Blue Economy and Mining) were additional CSs who spoke before the House and took questions from senators.
Senators from Raila Odinga’s ODM party were among those who skipped the morning session on Wednesday. Only Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu, a representative of the Wiper party and an Azimio member, attended the morning meeting.
Jubilee senators were present to hear the CSs respond to questions, but the Minority leadership avoided the sittings. During the CSs question period, the Jubilee senators Abdul Haji (Garissa), Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo), and Margret Kamar (nominated) were present in the chamber. Despite Raila’s resistance, the senators from the Jubilee party have already committed to cooperate with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
The appearance of CSs in legislative plenary is being contested in court by the Azimio One Kenya Coalition party, which calls the action unlawful.
Stewart Madzayo is the minority leader in the Senate, followed by Edwin Sifuna as the Deputy Minority Leader, Ledama Ole Kina as the Minority Whip, and Enock Wambua as the Deputy Minority Whip.
