From Customer Service Representative to Safaricom Financial Services Chief: Mungania Takes Over M-PESA Leadership

Safaricom has appointed Boniface as its Chief Financial Services Officer, placing a long-serving employee at the helm of its M-PESA business and wider financial services operations. His appointment follows approval by the Central Bank of Kenya and marks a new chapter in his nearly 20-year career at the telecommunications company.

Mungania joined Safaricom in February 2007 as a customer service representative before rising through various positions in the organisation. He later worked in dealer management, M-PESA business development and product leadership, building experience across different areas of the company’s operations.

His leadership experience includes heading M-PESA product management between 2016 and 2021. He subsequently led M-PESA Payments before serving as Acting Chief Digital Financial Services Officer between June 2022 and March 2023. In April 2023, he moved to the position of Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation.

Mungania succeeds Esther Masese Waititu, who left the position in July. He will report directly to Safaricom Group Chief Executive Officer Dr Peter Ndegwa, while taking permanent leadership of the company’s financial services business.

Beyond his professional experience, Mungania holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Entrepreneurship from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). He also has a MicroMasters qualification in Digital Product Management from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business.

His appointment comes after nearly two decades of progression within Safaricom, having moved from customer service operations to senior leadership of one of the company’s key business divisions.
