President William Ruto arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, October 28, to participate in the Third Russia-Africa Summit and Economic and Humanitarian Forum.
The visit—marking President Ruto’s first trip to Russia since taking office—aims to advance Kenya’s economic and strategic interests, with a primary focus on expanding export markets, securing affordable agricultural inputs, and attracting foreign direct investment.
Market Access and Trade Expansion
Speaking via State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, the administration outlined key priorities for the summit. Acting in his capacity as the African Union Champion on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), President Ruto is advocating for expanded Russian market entry for Kenyan exports, including tea, coffee, cut flowers, and fresh agricultural produce.
“As the AU champion on AfCFTA, the President will seek greater market access for African tea, coffee, cut flowers, fresh produce, and value-added products, while pursuing investment in agro-processing, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure,” Mohamed stated.
In addition to trade, the Kenyan delegation is engaging Russian counterparts on technology transfer, artificial intelligence, and digital skills development. Discussions are also focusing on securing reliable shipments of affordable fertilizers to support domestic food security programs.
High-Level Bilateral and Business Talks
Prior to President Ruto’s arrival, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi conducted preliminary ministerial discussions in Moscow, holding high-level engagements with Russian officials and business executives, including Sber CEO German Gref.
During the Africa–Russia Business Roundtable, President Ruto is expected to pitch Kenya as a premier investment destination and a strategic logistics entry point to the broader East African regional market. On the sidelines of the forum, the Head of State is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with regional leaders and heads of international financial institutions to address global governance reforms and regional security.
