Yvonne Okwara Bids Emotional Farewell to Citizen TV After Eight Years

Veteran news anchor and prime-time presenter Yvonne Okwara has officially exited Citizen TV, marking the end of an eight-year tenure at Royal Media Services (RMS).

Okwara announced her departure during the closing moments of her prime-time broadcast, The Explainer, on Tuesday night, October 27. The sign-off capped a 20-year career in media that began in radio and evolved into key newsroom leadership, prime-time presentation, and investigative reporting across major networks.

In a heartfelt farewell address to her viewers and newsroom colleagues, Okwara reflected on her journey in mainstream journalism.

“When I walked through these doors, I was young, fresh from university. The very place I started my career in journalism is the same place I get to wrap things up,” Okwara stated during her closing broadcast. “So, I am not done building. I’m simply moving to build something else.”

Throughout her statement, Okwara paid tribute to mentors and colleagues who shaped her career, specifically recognizing Linus Kaikai, Joe Ageyo, Jamila Mohammed, and Sam Gituku from the News Gang panel. Kaikai, the Group Editorial Director at RMS, joined Okwara on set to present a farewell cake, describing her departure as one of the most challenging sign-offs he has overseen in newsroom leadership.

Before concluding her final broadcast, Okwara urged Kenyan citizens and journalists to maintain rigorous public interest reporting.

“Keep asking questions. Keep demanding better. Keep holding those in power accountable,” Okwara added. “And above all, keep believing in this country.”

While Okwara has not officially revealed her next professional assignment, her exit concludes a prominent era on Kenyan prime-time television.
