Crisis at FKF: Leadership Suspended Amid Multi-Million Shilling Scandal

A major governance crisis has erupted within the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) following a dramatic decision by its National Executive Committee (NEC) to suspend federation president Hussein Mohamed over allegations of financial misconduct.

The accusations, which have sent shockwaves across the local football scene, center on the alleged misappropriation of Ksh42 million that had been earmarked for preparations and participation in the African Nations Championship (CHAN).According to sources within the federation, concerns had been mounting for weeks over how funds allocated for the continental tournament were being handled.

The NEC, in what appears to be an attempt to restore confidence and demonstrate accountability, convened and resolved to take immediate action against top officials linked to the financial irregularities.

The suspension of Hussein Mohamed marks one of the most significant disciplinary steps taken against a sitting FKF president in recent years. The sweeping directive did not stop at the president. NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim and Acting Chief Executive Officer Dennis Gicheru were also ordered to step aside.

Their temporary removal from office is intended to eliminate any potential interference with the ongoing investigations, which are expected to include a detailed forensic audit of FKF’s financial records.

The audit will likely scrutinize expenditure patterns, procurement processes, and internal controls tied to the CHAN budget. In the interim, the federation has moved to stabilize its leadership by appointing Deputy President Macdonald Mariga Wanyama as acting president.Mariga, a former international footballer with experience in top European leagues, now faces the immediate challenge of steering the federation through one of its most turbulent periods.

His role will be crucial in maintaining operational continuity, reassuring stakeholders, and safeguarding the integrity of Kenyan football as investigations unfold. The unfolding saga raises broader questions about governance, transparency, and financial oversight within sports institutions in Kenya.

FKF, which is responsible for managing the country’s football affairs, including national teams and domestic competitions, has in the past faced scrutiny over administrative and financial issues.

This latest development risks further eroding trust among players, sponsors, fans, and international partners. As investigations proceed, attention will be keenly focused on the outcomes of the forensic audit and whether criminal or disciplinary action will follow.

For now, the federation finds itself at a crossroads, with its leadership under intense scrutiny and the future direction of Kenyan football hanging in the balance.
