In a significant breakthrough for security operations in Kenya’s North Rift, the National Police Service (NPS) announced the voluntary surrender of 26 illegal firearms in Turkana South on Monday. The cache, collected in the Katilu area, includes 21 AK-47 rifles, two M16s, two MK4s, and one G3, marking a major success for the “Operation Maliza Uhalifu” disarmament initiative.
Officials attribute this milestone to intensified community engagement, with local leaders and elders encouraged by recent public meetings aimed at fostering trust and promoting regional peace. This surrender is part of a larger, ongoing effort to curb decades of banditry and cattle rustling, with data indicating over 348 illegal weapons have been recovered in the region since the start of the year.
The government continues to urge individuals to utilize the ongoing amnesty period to surrender unauthorized weapons without fear of prosecution, aiming to restore stability and facilitate development in Turkana and the surrounding counties. Security forces maintain a strong presence in the area to support this disarmament drive and ensure long-term security.
