Former Mungiki leader, Maina Njenga, was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified individuals in Kiambu town.
His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, claims that he was picked up by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) from his residence in Kiambu and taken to an unknown location. This was shared on his X handle.
The Standard, a local newspaper, indicated that according to Njenga’s brother, Njoroge Kamunya, Njenga was forcefully removed from his car. Earlier in May, authorities searched Njenga’s residences located in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Laikipia. By July, there were reports of his arrest in lower Matasia, Ngong, after which he was taken to an undisclosed location.
Subsequently, he appeared in Makadara courts. Charges against him included possession of traditional Maasai weapons such as rungus, bows, and arrows. Specifically, on July 20, 2023, in Kiserian, Kajiado, he and his associates were allegedly found with 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and three jembe sticks. Authorities suggested these weapons could be used disruptively, endangering public order. Along with this, he faced accusations of planning a felony and coordinating an illegal gathering. Despite the charges, Njenga maintained his innocence.
