President Ruto in Mozambique To Foster Collaboration With Kenya

Kenya and Mozambique Strengthen Bilateral Ties Through Comprehensive Trade Agreements

In a historic move to bolster diplomatic relations and correct trade imbalances, Kenya and Mozambique have signed a series of Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors. The signing ceremony, which took place during a two-day State Visit by Kenyan President William Ruto to Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, witnessed the two nations committing to mutual growth and development.

One of the key areas of focus is trade, where both countries acknowledge the current trade imbalance and are working together to achieve a more equitable situation. President Ruto expressed the Government’s commitment to expanding trade volumes between the two nations, thus rectifying the trade gap.

“In this burgeoning win-win relationship, Mozambique has the upper hand in trade balance terms, yet the opportunities before us take the form of a tide that will lift both our boats,” President Ruto noted during a state dinner hosted by Mozambique’s President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi.

The trade statistics over the last four years highlight the need for such cooperation. Between 2018 and 2022, imports from Mozambique to Kenya surged from Ksh 3.2 billion to Ksh 5.2 billion, whereas Kenyan exports to Mozambique only slightly increased from Ksh 1.2 billion to Ksh 1.4 billion. The leaders of both nations believe that by nurturing their economic ties, a more balanced and sustainable trade relationship can be achieved.

During the visit, eight MoUs were signed, covering a range of sectors including Mutual Legal Assistance, Diplomatic Training, Public Service Training, Investment Promotion, Blue Economy, and Mutual Recognition of Driving Licences. These agreements reflect a comprehensive approach to collaboration and lay the foundation for increased cooperation in the years ahead. President Ruto emphasized his commitment to promptly implement these agreements for the betterment of both nations.

Among the areas of focus during the State Visit were the Blue Economy and Fisheries, Trade, Defence, Agriculture, Energy, Transport, and Capacity Building. The bilateral discussions and agreements are poised to harness the synergies between the two nations, exploring mutual economic opportunities, and launching the Kenya-Mozambique Joint Trade Committee (JTC).

“Kenya and Mozambique stand on a strong foundation of robust bilateral frameworks, firmly poised between a wonderful history of effective solidarity, impactful collaboration and successful partnership and a bright future of abundant possibilities and tremendous opportunities,” President Ruto expressed, underlining the potential of this strengthened partnership.

Mozambique’s President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi echoed these sentiments, stating, “We celebrate the spirit of mutual endeavor that has made these achievements possible and draw inspiration for the challenges ahead in a complex and dynamic world.”

This visit signifies a continuation of President Ruto’s foreign policy efforts to strengthen Kenya’s relations with other nations. Notably, he visited Congo last month, where both nations agreed to abolish visa restrictions to facilitate the movement of people and boost trade.

As part of the delegation accompanying President Ruto, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua played a pivotal role in the negotiations and preparations for the visit. CS Mutua highlighted that the cooperation agreements signed cover Transport, Blue Economy, Energy, Agriculture, Defense, Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, Transfer of Sentenced Persons, and Public Service Training. He stressed the importance of a collaborative approach to ensure the successful implementation of these agreements, urging relevant ministries to work together diligently.

The State Visit was punctuated by a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose, culminating in the presentation of Keys to the City of Maputo to President Ruto as the highest distinction bestowed on an individual. The two leaders and their delegations also visited Maputo Municipal Hall, laying wreaths at Heroe’s Square to honor their countries’ shared history and promising future.

As President Ruto concluded his two-day visit, the lasting impression was of a renewed commitment to cooperation, a mutual endeavor for development, and the realization of abundant opportunities for both Kenya and Mozambique. The comprehensive agreements signed mark the beginning of a new era in their relations, one that holds the promise of balanced trade, sustainable growth, and shared prosperity.
