The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30 day notice for the removal of illegal structures and other encroachments along four major roads. The directive targets roadside traders, businesses and other unauthorized occupants, as KeNHA prepares to undertake road improvement and safety works along the affected routes.
The roads listed in the notice are Likoni–Ukunda–Lunga Lunga (A7), Kilifi–Malindi–Garsen–Witu (A7), Maili Tisa–Kitale (B14), and Eldoret–Nyaru (B124). KeNHA said the affected occupants must remove their goods, structures and other encroachments within 30 days from the date of the notice. The deadline is therefore Thursday, October 29, 2026.
The authority said the removal is necessary to facilitate planned infrastructure works. These include service road improvements, construction of bus bays and drainage rehabilitation.
The projects also form part of KeNHA’s ongoing performance based maintenance and safety enhancement programme. The authority said the works are intended to improve road safety and visibility while reducing traffic congestion.
“Illegal Occupation of the Road Reserves is an offence under the Kenyan Laws (Kenya Roads Act, 2007, and the Traffic Act Cap 403),” the notice stated.
KeNHA has warned that structures and goods left on the road reserves after the deadline will be removed without further reference to their owners. The authority added that such action will be undertaken in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.
It further stated that the cost of removing the remaining structures or goods will be borne by the owners.
The notice therefore gives affected traders and other occupants a limited period to clear the designated road reserves. Meanwhile, KeNHA says the move will create space for planned works and support safer and less congested roads.
“All affected occupants are therefore required to remove their goods, structures, and any other encroachments from the road reserve within thirty (30) days from the date of this Notice,” the notice stated.
