Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka [has called for a united opposition front to protect constitutionalism], while strongly criticizing the national government’s recent administrative operations targeting foreign small-scale traders.
[Speaking on Thursday, September 10, after chairing a Joint Azimio Council] and National Executive Committee meeting in Nairobi, Musyoka asserted that the country requires urgent course correction to safeguard democratic values and the rule of law. Flanked by opposition leaders, the former Vice President emphasized that opposition factions are consolidating their efforts to present a formidable political movement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Kenya is headed in the wrong direction, and we have a responsibility to change course,” [Musyoka said following the meeting].
Addresssing executive orders concerning foreign small-scale traders and hawkers, Musyoka argued that the government’s enforcement measures lack proper strategy and undermine regional integration frameworks. He specifically highlighted the plight of Burundian nationals operating in Kenya, stating that members of the East African Community (EAC) deserve dignity and fair administrative treatment under established regional treaties.
“Our brothers and sisters from Burundi are part of the East African Community, and they deserve dignity, not suspicion,” [Musyoka said]. “Kenya must remain a good neighbour and honour the spirit of East African integration.”
[Musyoka claimed the directive targeting foreign retailers was politically motivated], alleging that government action intensified after officials realized some foreign traders held political leanings toward opposition figures. He maintained that small-scale traders are not the primary cause of local economic hardship, pointing instead to corruption, heavy taxation, and unpredictable economic policies.
The Wiper leader also discussed political alignment strategies following consultations held earlier in the day with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to pushing for a single opposition presidential candidate for 2027. Additionally, Musyoka confirmed that the opposition would defend the right of citizens to peacefully assemble during the upcoming Linda Mwananchi public gathering scheduled for Sunday.
