The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Amin Mohamed, has initiated a comprehensive probe into a disturbing case involving a woman who flew from Saudi Arabia to Kenya to retrieve Ksh.300,000 erroneously sent to the wrong M-Pesa number. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that she was subsequently defrauded by officers at the Kasarani Police Station.
Responding to a viral TikTok video posted by user Bon Macharia on Friday, the DCI assured the public that swift action was being taken. The Kasarani Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) has been assigned to spearhead the investigation. The DCI emphasized that updates on the progress of the investigation would be shared in due course.
In the video, the woman, identified as Irene, recounted her ordeal. She explained that she intended to send Ksh.300,000 to her family but mistakenly transferred the funds to an incorrect M-Pesa number. Determined to rectify the error, she flew back to Kenya from Saudi Arabia and reported the incident at the Kasarani Police Station DCI offices.
According to Irene’s testimony, two officers named Lucy Mbithe Munyambu and Nderitu purportedly assured her that they could trace the suspect and recover her money. She claimed they instructed her to await updates and, distressingly, requested financial contributions for fuel and transportation expenses.
Irene alleged that she complied with their demands, sending Ksh.20,000 for fuel and an additional Ksh.3,000 for a cab. However, suspicions arose when she discovered that the number provided for the taxi payment belonged to another DCI officer who accompanied them.
Despite her cooperation, Irene asserted that the efforts to recover her money were futile. She claimed that the suspect allegedly bribed the DCI officers with Ksh.100,000 of the misappropriated funds, leading to his release. Subsequently, she received threats from the suspect, prompting her to contact DCI Lucy, who responded rudely and dismissively.
The revelation of these allegations has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability within the police force. Concerns over the integrity and professionalism of law enforcement officers have been raised, highlighting the importance of a thorough investigation and appropriate disciplinary action if misconduct is substantiated.
The DCI’s commitment to transparency and diligence in addressing these allegations is paramount to restoring public trust and upholding the rule of law. The outcome of the investigation will be eagerly awaited by the public, with expectations of justice and accountability for any wrongdoing uncovered.
As the investigation progresses, it is imperative for law enforcement agencies to prioritize the protection of citizens’ rights and maintain the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in their operations. Any breach of trust or abuse of authority must be met with swift and decisive action to uphold the sanctity of the law enforcement system.
