Inspirational Kenyan personality and Member of Parliament, Phelix Odiwour, popularly known as Jalang’o, has been making waves with his powerful messages of transformation and positivity. The former radio host turned lawmaker has captivated both young and old with his remarkable journey from addiction to redemption.
With a recent social media post on Instagram, Jalang’o provided a nostalgic glimpse into his past as a devout church member. The shared photograph featured the charismatic MP alongside his affectionately named ‘church mates,’ standing proudly at the center of the frame. The image carries a sense of timelessness, transporting viewers back to an earlier era of Jalang’o’s life.
However, Jalang’o’s journey has been one of continuous transformation. Just a few days prior, he openly discussed his struggle with alcohol and drugs. He attributed his escape from the clutches of substance abuse to divine intervention and his unwavering determination to break free.
Alongside Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris, Jalang’o commended Passari’s dedication to the welfare of young men and women alike. He stressed the importance of personal transformation and encouraged young individuals to choose a path that leads to positive change.
In a joint address, Jalang’o shared his personal experience, stating, “I was once ensnared by the grip of drugs and alcohol… But through the grace of God and my determination to change, I stand before you today as living proof of what is possible.”
His words resonate deeply, acting as both a cautionary tale and a source of hope for those grappling with their own challenges.
Jalang’o’s message extends beyond personal triumph; it encompasses the realm of relationships and family building. He emphasised that true change enriches not only one’s own life but also the lives of those around them. He urged young people to become responsible individuals capable of providing and protecting, qualities that contribute to the foundation of healthy families.
The lawmaker’s impassioned plea also extended to the digital world. Jalang’o, recognising the power of social media in the lives of the younger generation, passionately defended platforms like TikTok. He implored officials not to ban TikTok, as it serves as a creative outlet and an opportunity for young individuals to earn money through content creation.
“Don’t ban Tik Tok. The young people in their thousands believe that Tik Tok is where they are making their money,” implored Jalang’o during a Tv interview
Jalang’o’s advocacy for social media creativity comes in light of recent attempts to ban TikTok in Kenya. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed receiving a petition seeking to prohibit the platform due to concerns about inappropriate content and its impact on cultural and religious values. However, Jalang’o countered this by highlighting the professional potential of social media, pointing out that corporates are investing in these platforms for financial gain.
“Corporates have noticed this and are putting money into social media including TikTok and it proves that it can be used for also professional matters,” Jalang’o explained
As of June 2023, TikTok has faced restrictions in the United States, with bans in several states due to national security concerns. Despite the controversies, Jalang’o sees the positive side of social media’s influence. He explained that these platforms can be used not only for entertainment but also for professional purposes, echoing the sentiments of many young content creators who have found success online.
Beyond his advocacy for social media, Jalang’o has set his sights on even greater aspirations. An undated video of him addressing mourners went viral earlier this year, revealing his intentions to vie for the top political seat in the near future. Drawing inspiration from Deputy President William Ruto, Jalang’o expressed his desire to learn the strategies that have allowed Ruto to consistently win elections.
He confidently stated, “I’m telling you I’m getting those skills and I know I will become the first person from the Luo community to become president.”
Jalang’o’s words are not just empty rhetoric; they carry the weight of his own journey of transformation. His story serves as a testament to the power of change, determination, and personal growth. With his commitment to guiding the youth away from addiction and towards positive transformation, combined with his advocacy for creative expression on social media, Jalang’o continues to inspire and make a positive impact on Kenyan society.
In a world where challenges and uncertainties abound, individuals like Jalang’o stand as beacons of hope, reminding us that change is possible and that our actions can shape our future. As he strives to empower the youth, encourage responsibility, and champion the potential of social media, Jalang’o’s legacy is undoubtedly one of inspiration and progress.
