Sossion Urges Prompt Implementation of Revised Housing Levy

Wilson Sossion, the Chief Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, has voiced his support for the housing levy proposed by President William Ruto. Sossion emphasized the importance of implementing the revised housing levy promptly, which includes a 6% contribution from workers as well as a margin contribution. During an interview with K24, Sossion explained that the increase in the levy is necessary to address the issue of Kenyan workers retiring into poverty due to inadequate savings.

Sossion identified acute poverty at the household level as the primary problem facing the country. He attributed the rise of slums in Kenyan cities to the insufficient implementation of the Housing Act initiated several years ago. According to Sossion, workers earning as little as Sh5000 are forced to pay the same amount for substandard housing.

To tackle the housing problem, Sossion called for a partnership between the government and sectors beyond the private sphere. He emphasized that the country cannot solely rely on the private sector and stated the need for a collaborative approach.

Sossion argued that once the government takes action, it will be better equipped to provide for the basic needs of the people. Recently, President William Ruto announced the introduction of the housing levy fund in the Finance Bill 2023. This initiative requires salaried Kenyans to contribute three percent of their monthly income. President Ruto emphasized that the housing plan aims to create employment opportunities for the youth of Kenya.

Wilson Sossion, along with President William Ruto, advocates for the implementation of the housing levy to address the housing crisis in Kenya. Sossion highlights the issue of poverty and the rise of slums, emphasizing the importance of government involvement and partnerships. The housing levy aims to generate funds for housing development while also creating employment opportunities.
