Amid speculations that President William Ruto’s administration plans to shut down media and internet ahead of Monday’s anti-government protests, the Head of State on Sunday evening cleared the air revealing that his government has no plans to do so.
The country’s boss emphasized that Kenya had made infinite milestones away from the era in which media could be shutdown for covering events of anti-government demos.
“Just for the record…take it from me, Kenya has come a long way, the era of swictching off this or that… that is way behind us,” President Ruto said.
To the Kenya Media Sector Working Group which laid down concerns on the alleged information darkness, President Ruto gave his words that his administration will support media irrespective of their ‘stand.’
He said:
“I have said that we will support the right of the media to carry out its function…. you have our absolute support… irrespective of how biased you are against us, we will support you.”
While urging the opposition leader to promptly cease plans of Monday protest, the President added:
“If we exchange positions, if you stand where I’m standing you guys would have switched off the media… but us we will not.”
