After his official handgun went missing in unexplained circumstances in Nairobi’s Mathare neighborhood on Thursday, a police officer was detained.
The police officer claimed he had left his 30-bullet Scorpion rifle at home when he went to purchase medicine. But when he returned, he discovered that the house had been broken into and the weapon was gone.
He claimed that on Wednesday night, at midnight, he left the station after feeling ill and went home. The alleged housebreaking took place after he left the firearm at home and went to a pharmacy for medication.
When he got home, he claimed that his house had been broken into and that the mentioned gun and ammunition had been taken. Also stolen was his cell phone. The home of his neighbor was also broken into, although nothing was taken from there. Officers searched the area in vain because no finds or arrests were made.
Adamson Bungei, the head of the Nairobi police, said they are looking into the incident. Teams are looking for the weapon on the ground, according to Bungei.
