Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, the attorney general of Libya, has ordered the arrest of Al-Jumhuriya Bank employees at the Al-Mustaqbal branch for embezzling public funds.
The bank officials are also charged with “obtaining illicit benefits, intentionally causing major harm to public finances, and abuse of power,” according to Al-Sour.
During questioning, the suspects admitted to “providing foreign exchange currency for personal purposes.”
A campaign against corruption is being run by the Attorney General in all state institutions. Numerous government employees and diplomats have been detained in connection with theft, fraud, and abuse of authority.
The Attorney General’s Office reported on Tuesday that officials at the Shuwairf Villager Hospital in Libya had been detained on suspicion of embezzling 3.56 million Libyan dinars worth of public monies.
The hospital’s director, his deputy, and the acting financial controller were all mentioned in the statement as being under investigation for wrongdoing. It further stated that fraud had tarnished the hospital’s contracting processes.
The three hospital administrators plotted with a business not to deliver the equipment and supplies under contract.
The statement stated that “the accused provided false paperwork, alleging that they had obtained medical supplies and equipment valued at 3,560,000 dinars.”
Al-Sour also mandated the arrest of the Libyan Embassy’s Financial Controller in Qatar on suspicion of wrongdoing.
The Financial Controller “defrauded Libya’s public fund, worth tens of thousands in foreign cash,” according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office. It was unclear whether this sum was expressed in US dollars or Qatari riyals.
According to the statement, the Chief Prosecutor at the Attorney’s Office looked into the allegations after receiving a complaint about financial irregularities from the Financial Audit Bureau.
The financial controller and his predecessor “planned to abuse the powers of office,” according to the statement. The veracity of the incident against the accused was established by investigations.
