Government through the Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government has put notice to end old generation Kenyan passport by November 30, 2022.
According to a statement released by Director General, Directorate of Immigration Services Alexander Muteshi, the decision to have a new EAC biometric e-passport was made by East Africa Community ministers last year in a meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania.
Following this directive, Kenyans have been asked to get the new biometric e-passport before then, which has an electronic chip that can be used to authenticate the identity of the passport holder.
“Persuant to the decision made by Council of Minister’s meeting held in Arusha from 22nd to 29th November 2021, the deadline for phasing out of the old generation passport for all EAC member states is November 2022. In line with this decision the Directorate of Immigration Services wishes to inform the general public that Kenya is bound to migrate fully to the new East African Community biometric e-passport by 30th November, 2022. Kenyans are therefore advised to acquire the new biometric e-passport to avoid inconveniences.” Read.
