In a recent development, Wiper Party Leader and Azimio la Umoja Principal, Kalonzo Musyoka, announced that the opposition now acknowledges William Ruto as Kenya’s genuine President. This shift in stance was articulated during the funeral service of Wiper-nominated MCA Constance Mkamburi Mwandawiro held in Voi, Taita Taveta county, on September 2.
The endorsement of Ruto’s presidency by Azimio stems from his commitment to maintain the dialogue between the factions of Kenya Kwanza and Azimio. Musyoka praised President Ruto for his unwavering dedication to ensuring that these critical discussions proceed. He emphasized, “I have to commend the president for being steadfast in insisting that these talks should persist. His determined position has earned our recognition, and we’re poised to wait for what the future brings.” He invoked Robert Mbui’s statement, emphasizing the importance of divine respect in political matters.
However, not all political leaders share Musyoka’s sentiment. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faced Musyoka’s censure following his recent trip to Machakos. Musyoka criticized Gachagua’s comments made during a funeral in Ukambani, which sparked dismay among Machakos residents. Musyoka stated, “Although we harbor no animosity against anyone, certain statements, like those made by Gachagua during his Ukambani visit, have raised eyebrows and drawn criticism. It’s crucial that every individual exercises prudence in their utterances, and we’re determined to ensure that these dialogues remain unhindered.”
It’s noteworthy that post the 2022 general elections, the Azimio coalition, led by Raila Odinga, initially declined to recognize Ruto’s presidency. They alleged that their triumphant outcome in the August 9, 2022 election was illicitly usurped.
Nevertheless, the recent weeks have observed a more conciliatory tone from the Azimio coalition. The coalition, along with Kenya Kwanza, resolved to embark on a second phase of discussions to mend the rifts.
On Friday, the committee responsible for these negotiations reached a consensus to give precedence to specific matters in their dialogues. Topmost on their agenda are issues related to electoral and justice processes, unresolved constitutional subjects, and loyalty to political parties and their coalitions. Moreover, the committee emphasized the need to integrate financial considerations into the constitution and to further solidify the role and significance of state officials.
