Struggled and put together the down payment and signed the contract.” said Wahu on her official Facebook account

Struggling and determined, Wahu managed to gather the necessary funds for the down payment and signed the contract, eagerly anticipating the beginning of a new chapter in her life. But then, a phone call shattered her dreams. The voice on the other end explained, with thinly veiled prejudice, that she was no longer welcome because she was a musician. They judged her as a single young girl who loved to sing, assuming she would bring undesirable elements into their community. Without giving her a chance to prove herself, they callously ‘evicted’ her before she even had the opportunity to move in.

“Then one day, someone called me and told me I couldn’t move in.The reason being that I’m a musician (they didn’t say it to my face, but it was obvious). Unfortunately, I was judged as a single young girl who loves to sing, so labda ntakua naleta wababa, ama ntakua nalewa kila siku, I donno. A look they didn’t want to associate with, so even without giving me a chance to show them who I was, I was ‘evicted’ before I moved in,” added the iconic musician

Devastated by this cruel rejection, Wahu could have allowed bitterness to consume her. Instead, she chose to channel her pain and frustration into her music, pouring her heart into every lyric and melody. Her talent and determination began to garner attention, propelling her to success in the Kenyan music scene.
