Dressing Dilemma: Mama Sarah Wraps Journalist in Shuka

During an event where Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii was distributing title deeds to local residents, a controversial incident occurred involving Mama Sarah Cherono, the mother of President William Ruto. Mama Sarah interrupted the proceedings to address what she perceived as the indecent dressing of a female journalist. In an attempt to rectify the situation, Mama Sarah offered to cover up the journalist with a Maasai shuka, a traditional cloth worn by the Maasai people.

Explaining her actions in the local Kalenjin language, Mama Sarah expressed concern for the journalist’s attire, particularly its short length. She justified her intervention by considering the possibility of the journalist dropping her camera and being unable to retrieve it due to her clothing. Mama Sarah viewed her actions as a blessing and an act of love towards the journalist, urging her not to be upset about it.

Furthermore, Mama Sarah used the incident as an opportunity to advocate for the importance of carrying a shuka, emphasizing its cultural significance. She reminded women of the traditional teaching that a shuka should always accompany them, citing situations such as encountering a pregnant woman in need of cover during an unexpected encounter on the road.

Following the incident, the journalist left the event but later returned wearing a more modest outfit. Mama Sarah, in addition to her role as a concerned mother, was also present as a recipient of a title deed from the county government. During her address, she emphasized the value of land as an asset and encouraged all Kenyans to make good use of their land for their own benefit and that of future generations.

While Mama Sarah’s actions stirred controversy and sparked discussions about cultural norms and appropriate dress, it also highlighted the significance of traditional practices and the need to uphold them in contemporary society.
