Two Of The Kenyan Abductees Set Free

After more than two weeks of search efforts, 22-year-old Peter Muteti and 24-year-old Billy Mwangi were found alive on Monday, January 6. Their abductors remain unidentified.

Mwangi was reunited with his family this morning after arriving at his father’s home in Majengo. Muteti, reportedly found disoriented in Nairobi’s Central Business District, was picked up by his family and is now recuperating.

The discovery of the two young men has brought relief to their families, who had endured days of uncertainty. Mwangi’s emotional reunion with his mother was captured at their Embu home, where family members gathered to celebrate his safe return.

Reports indicate that Muteti was abducted in Uthiru on December 21, 2024, by four armed men who forced him into a Toyota Prado. His family linked the incident to his controversial social media posts. Mwangi was reportedly taken the same day from a barber shop, sparking protests in Embu as residents demanded his release.

Their safe return coincides with the discovery of other individuals who had also disappeared in December, including Rony Kiplagat, found in Machakos, and Bernard Kavuli, found in Kitale.

The National Police Service, previously accused of involvement in the abductions, reiterated its denial through Inspector General Douglas Kanja, stating, “The police are not holding any reported abductees.”

The disappearances have drawn significant public outrage, with planned protests against abductions gaining momentum before today’s developments. Calls for accountability persist as Kenyans demand action against the alarming trend of enforced disappearances.

The circumstances surrounding the abductions and eventual release of Muteti and Mwangi remain unclear, with authorities yet to provide further details.
