A devastating pre-dawn fire swept through Nairobi’s Gikomba Market on Sunday, killing two people, injuring 17 others, and destroying property worth millions of shillings. The blaze, which erupted at approximately 2:00 AM on June 21, 2026, heavily impacted the Kamukunji side of the expansive open-air trading center.
Emergency response teams recovered the bodies of an adult male and an adult female from the debris after firefighters battled the fierce flames for several hours. Medical personnel rushed the 17 injured individuals to nearby hospitals, where they are currently receiving urgent treatment for various degrees of severe burns and smoke inhalation.
The fast-moving inferno quickly reduced hundreds of business stalls, major timber yards, and large bales of secondhand clothing to ashes. Thousands of local traders now face devastating financial losses, as the market serves as the primary source of daily livelihood for many families within the capital city.
Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja visited the affected area on Sunday morning to assess the damage and reassure the distraught business community. He explicitly promised that the county government would protect the small-scale traders from displacement and allow them to rebuild their temporary structures immediately.
“We will ensure that no land developers exploit this tragedy to evict anyone from this public market space,” Governor Sakaja stated during his address to the traders. “Our immediate priority is to support the victims and facilitate the safe reconstruction of their stalls in their original locations.”
Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan confirmed that a multi-agency team has launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire outbreak. He also noted that security forces have been deployed across the area to secure salvageable goods and prevent incidents of looting.
Traders expressed immense frustration over the recurring nature of these market blazes, noting that narrow access roads repeatedly hamper emergency response vehicles. The latest disaster has reignited intense public debate regarding the urgent need for modernized infrastructure, improved fire hydrants, and strict safety regulations within Nairobi’s commercial hubs.
County authorities plan to establish a temporary humanitarian relief desk at the site to register all affected businessmen and coordinate the distribution of essential emergency aid. Meanwhile, police officers will maintain a round-the-clock presence at the market perimeter while investigators sift through the remaining rubble for clues.
