Travelers Stranded for Hours in Massive Traffic Snarl-Up on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

Motorists using the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway endured over six hours of gridlock Thursday morning, with traffic at a complete standstill on a 14-kilometer stretch near Mariakani. The congestion, which began between Mazeras and Mariakani, left road users stranded without alternative routes.

Long-distance drivers attributed the traffic snarl-up to ongoing dual highway expansion works. However, some travelers pointed to increased travel during the festive season and preparations for Jamhuri Day celebrations as contributing factors.

Images circulating on social media showed rows of immobilized heavy commercial vehicles and personal cars packed tightly along the highway. Frustrated travelers took to social platforms, urging traffic police to intervene and manage the chaotic situation.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) recently announced a partial closure of sections of Mombasa Road, including the Southern Bypass interchange, to facilitate road construction. This seven-day closure, effective December 7, is expected to further disrupt traffic flow on key highways passing through Nairobi.

In response to the gridlock, authorities advised travelers to consider alternative modes of transport, such as flights between Nairobi and Mombasa. Traffic jams along Kenya’s major highways are a common occurrence during festive seasons, with congestion intensifying ahead of Christmas celebrations.

The highway’s current expansion is expected to improve traffic flow in the long term. However, road users continue to grapple with delays caused by the construction works. Travelers are urged to plan their journeys in advance and stay updated on road conditions during this busy season.
